Weekly club update: Sat 27 March
With the National League North and National League South seasons now null and void and all league football below cancelled, it is easy to forget that the Step 1 season continues albeit with no relegation.
The announcement that the 2021-22 season will begin on Saturday 14 August sets the schedule for the coming months and plenty of activity around the club with the squad to build, training and pre-season friendlies to arrange. Wrapped around this is the opening of The Venue and an exciting programme of launch activities through late June and July so, while still a little way off, there is plenty for Saints fans to look forward to.
With the Step 1, not to mention EFL, season continuing there are opportunities for some players to complete the season on loan at other clubs. Ethan Coleman has joined National League King’s Lynn Town on a short term loan until 1 May and goes straight into their squad for today’s game against Eastleigh. We wish Ethan well in the coming weeks.
On Thursday the National League announced its disciplinary actions against 18 clubs judged not to have fulfilled fixtures without due cause, 16 at Step 2. The league statement expresses sympathy with the unprecedented circumstances faced by clubs and financial difficulties caused by the pandemic and absence of supporters at games but confirms a need to uphold the rules of the competition and be fair to all clubs. Consequently fines and suspended points deductions for next season have been given to sixteen clubs at Step 2 including National League North, Southport for a separate Covid-related charge.. The clubs have the right of appeal to the Football Association.
As the completion of The Venue approaches the club is recruiting its staff team. Adverts for the posts of Manager, bar manager, bar staff and cleaning staff are on the club website. These posts offer great opportunities for employment at the club and to be involved at the very opening of The Venue.
Until next Saturday, take care and stay safe.
