Kidderminster Harriers  0-2  Brackley Town       9 Oct 2021

Saints on top

There was much to admire in Saints’ performance against a strong Kidderminster Harriers side.  The match was an excellent advertisement for non-league football and deservedly won by the visitors with an impressive all-round performance.

“From start to finish it was fantastic from everybody concerned,” Kevin Wilkin said.  “We knew it would be tough but it was a great surface to play football on.  The game could have swung away from us but at crucial moments we didn’t allow that to happen and to close out the game with a clean sheet was especially pleasing.”

Goals at either end of the first half secured the points that put Brackley into the early season top spot in the National League North table.  The game was held up for several minutes as Gaz Dean received treatment for a facial injury before Jordan Richards scored the first on 8 minutes firing into the roof of the net from 15 yards as Harriers failed to clear from a free-kick.

BTFC v Kidderminster Galllery Photos2Saints had to weather the storm as the home side piled on the pressure three times bringing fine saves from Danny Lewis, the most spectacular a tip over from a fierce effort by Alex Penny.  But Twariq Yusuf scored the second on 44 minutes, an exquisite finish from the corner of the penalty area arrowing his shot perfectly beyond keeper Luke Simpson and into the top corner to send Brackley in at the break two goals to the good.

Substitute Omari Sterling twice went close for the home side in an even second half but determined defending held firm to maintain the unbeaten away record and to take the points back to Northamptonshire.

“They are a good side and we had to defend bravely and stoutly,” Wilkin added.  “Gaz led that very well and equally Danny when called upon stood up to it so that we came out on the right side of it and gain those really welcome three points.  The work ethic from everybody was tremendous.”
